Main Purpose of the Job

The Senior Project Manager (SPM) will join the Project Management Team within the Genomics Pipelines Group at the Earlham Institute and provide project management support to the Genomics Pipelines and Core Bioinformatics Groups. The SPM will play a key role in the delivery of genomics data and analyses from initial enquiry to delivery.

The Genomics Pipelines and Core Bioinformatics Groups deliver next-generation sequencing data and analyses across a range of technology platforms on a fee-for-service basis, while developing new pipelines at the edge of innovation. Projects will be planned and executed in an environment of rapidly-changing technologies and procedures, with a requirement to implement new processes at the same time as delivering high-quality data across a large number of projects.

The SPM will work closely with members of the Genomics Pipelines and the Core Bioinformatics Groups to deliver scheduled projects to collaborators/customers both within and without EI. The SPM will report to the Project Management Team Leader and will be responsible for interpreting project requirements, advising on experimental design, assisting with sample submission, tracking and reporting on project progress, and delivering data/analyses.

The SPM will support the Project Management Team Leader in delivering projects on time, within budget and to agreed specifications, with the aim of supporting EI’s strategic science programmes and the National Capability in Genomics and Single Cell Analysis.

Main Activities & Responsibilities

Providing day-to-day project management support to the Genomics Pipelines and Core Bioinformatics Groups; coordinating group members to accurately track projects through sample processing and analysis pipelines; providing regular feedback to collaborators/customers on project progression, including preparing summary reports as required; communicating risks and other issues that may compromise or delay project delivery; reviewing data/analysis output against project specifications; overseeing delivery of final datasets and analyses.

Providing expert guidance to collaborators/customers from initial enquiry to quotation delivery; interpreting and understanding customer/collaborator requirements; communicating with the relevant members of the Genomics Pipelines and Core Bioinformatics Groups to develop the optimum project plan, carefully considering scientific objectives, technologies and resources available, and budgetary constraints; preparing formal quotations to reflect agreed project specifications, clearly communicating costs, deliverables, timescales, and risks to collaborators/customers; providing details of technical methodologies in support of grant applications.
Maintaining a comprehensive record of enquiries using EI’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, ensuring that information is complete/accurate and tracking case progress to ensure that enquiries are dealt with in a timely fashion and prioritised as required.
Guiding collaborators/customers through sample preparation and submission, ensuring that the technical and scientific requirements of the project are documented and communicated to the project delivery team to enable efficient delivery of data and analyses.
Maintaining up to date records of project status and completed projects; providing details of technical methodologies to support manuscripts for publication.

Assisting the Project Management Team Leader in preparing activity and forecast reports; contributing to the development of promotional material and technical documentation.

Attending scientific conferences and trade shows to represent EI, promote the services offered by the Group, and network with existing and prospective customers/collaborators.

The SPM will report to the Project Management Team Leader and will be responsible for interpreting project requirements, advising on experimental design, assisting with sample submission, tracking and reporting on project progress, and delivering data/analyses with the aim of supporting EI’s strategic science programmes and the National Capability in Genomics and Single Cell Analysis.

The ideal candidate:

The successful applicant will possess at least a PhD or equivalent experience in Biological Sciences and will have substantial post-graduate experience in genomics and/or bioinformatics with a particular focus on next-generation sequencing. The successful applicant will also have demonstrated ability to deliver projects on time, within budget and to agreed specifications as well as experience in a customer-facing role. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are also required.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,625 to £38,575 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This is a fulltime post on a permanent basis.
